The click that starts when you turn — and stops when you straighten up

You reverse out of a tight spot near Queen Vic Market, crank the wheel hard, and hear it: click-click-click-click, rhythmic and speeding up as you accelerate. Straighten the wheel and it's gone. Turn the other way and it might be quiet, or it might click on that side too.

If that sounds familiar, you're almost certainly listening to a constant velocity (CV) joint on its way out. It's one of the few car noises specific enough to diagnose from the driver's seat, and it's worth understanding — because the difference between fixing it this month and ignoring it until it grinds is often the difference between a cheap boot job and a full axle replacement.

What a CV joint actually does

Front-wheel-drive cars (and plenty of AWDs) send power to the wheels through drive axles. Each axle has a joint at each end that has to do something tricky: transfer engine torque to a wheel that is also steering and moving up and down over bumps. That's the constant velocity joint's whole job — deliver smooth power through a changing angle.

The outer CV joint (nearest the wheel) handles the big steering angles, so it's the one that usually fails first and clicks when you turn. The inner joint deals with suspension travel and tends to cause a clunk or vibration under acceleration rather than a turning click.

To survive, the joint's ball bearings and races live packed in special grease and sealed inside a ribbed rubber or thermoplastic CV boot. That boot is the hero of this whole story.

Why the torn boot is the real culprit

A healthy CV joint can outlast the car. What kills it is almost never the joint itself failing first — it's the boot splitting.

Here's the chain of events we see over and over:

  1. The rubber boot ages, cracks along a rib, or gets nicked by road debris.
  2. Grease flings out (you'll spot dark grease sprayed on the inside of the wheel or around the tyre).
  3. Water, grit and road dust get flung in.
  4. That grinding paste chews through the hardened bearings.
  5. The joint develops play, and now it clicks on turns.
Catch it at step 1 or 2 — a split boot with the joint still smooth — and it's a straightforward reboot and re-grease. Catch it at step 5 and the joint is worn, and you're replacing the whole axle.

This is genuinely one of the best-value early-catch repairs on a car. The rubber part is cheap. The consequences of ignoring it are not.

Clicking or popping when turning

The classic outer CV joint symptom. Sharpest at low speed under load — think tight roundabouts, reversing out of the driveway, or U-turns on a quiet street. It gets faster with speed and quieter when you're pointed straight.

A rhythmic clunk when accelerating from a stop

More often the inner joint. You feel it through the floor as you pull away, especially if you accelerate hard from stationary.

Vibration that builds with speed

A worn inner joint can shudder under acceleration on the freeway. It's easy to blame on a wheel balance, but a balance issue is speed-related regardless of throttle, while a CV vibration comes on with power.

Grease on the inside of the wheel

The dead giveaway that a boot has already split. If you see a spray pattern of dark grease around the rim or on the underside of the guard, get it looked at before the clicking starts.

Is it the CV joint, a wheel bearing, or something in the suspension?

These get confused constantly, so here's how we separate them:

  • CV joint: clicks or pops, tied to turning and acceleration. Load-dependent.
  • Wheel bearing: a droning or humming that rises with speed, and often changes tone as you sway the car left and right at a constant speed. It doesn't click on tight turns.
  • Suspension or steering (ball joints, tie rods, sway bar links): knocks and clunks over bumps, or looseness in the steering — not a rhythmic click that scales with road speed.

The quick test we use: find an empty car park, wind the wheel to full lock, and drive slowly in a tight circle. If the clicking shows up hard on lock and disappears when you straighten, it's the CV joint on the outer side of the turn. Do it both directions to find which axle.

Can a torn CV boot just be replaced?

Sometimes — and it's always the first question worth asking. If the boot has only recently split and the joint still feels tight with no clicking, replacing the boot, cleaning out the contaminated grease and repacking it can save the axle entirely.

But be honest about timing. If it's been clicking for weeks, grit has already done its work and a reboot is a false economy — you'll be back for the axle soon anyway. In that case a complete CV axle (half-shaft) replacement is usually the smarter fix. Modern replacement axles come pre-assembled with fresh joints and boots at both ends, and on most cars it's a same-day job.

What happens if you keep driving on it?

A clicking CV joint won't strand you tomorrow. But left long enough, a badly worn outer joint can seize or, in a worst case, separate — and losing drive to a wheel mid-corner or in traffic is exactly the situation you don't want. Long before that, you're grinding away a repairable part into a non-repairable one. The economics only get worse with time.
