Clunks, Vibrations and Uneven Tyre Wear: A Melbourne Driver's Guide to Worn Suspension and Steering Components
Your car is trying to tell you something
Suspension and steering parts rarely fail all at once. They wear slowly, and long before anything breaks you'll notice small changes — a new clunk over the tram tracks on Brunswick Street, a shimmy through the wheel on the Monash, or a front tyre that's gone bald on one edge while the rest looks fine. The trouble is that most of these symptoms feel vaguely similar from the driver's seat, so it's easy to ignore them or blame the wrong thing.
This guide connects specific sensations to the components most likely causing them. It won't replace a proper inspection on a hoist, but it'll help you describe the problem accurately and understand why a mechanic wants to check what they check.
Melbourne's roads are unusually hard on suspension. Between poorly patched potholes after wet winters, raised tram tracks, aggressive speed humps in the inner suburbs and the occasional unsealed edge out west, our cars cop a hammering that quietly accelerates wear on every joint and bush.
Clunking noise over bumps
A clunk, knock or rattle when you drive over a speed bump, pothole or tram track is one of the most common complaints we hear. It's the sound of something with play in it — a part that should be firmly located but now moves a fraction more than it should before it takes up load.
Most likely culprits
- Worn control arm bushes: The rubber (or polyurethane) bushes that let the control arm pivot perish and crack over time. When they've deteriorated, the arm shifts under load and you get a dull clunk, often worse at low speed over sharp bumps.
- Ball joints with play: A worn ball joint knocks as the suspension moves through its travel. This one matters — a badly worn ball joint can eventually separate, which is why it's an automatic Roadworthy Certificate fail.
- Worn sway bar links or bushes: These are a very frequent source of a light rattling clunk over rough surfaces, especially noticeable on corrugated back streets.
- Top strut mounts: A clunk or knock when turning at low speed (like pulling into a driveway) often points to a failing strut mount bearing.
The type of clunk gives clues. A single sharp knock over a bump leans toward links or bushes; a knock while turning leans toward strut mounts or ball joints. But sounds travel and mislead, so pinpointing usually needs the car on a hoist with someone levering each joint to find the movement.
Wandering, vague or wobbly steering
If you're making constant small corrections to keep the car in its lane on the Westgate, or the steering feels loose and disconnected, the fault is usually in the steering linkage or the parts that keep your wheels pointing straight.
What to look at
- Tie rod ends: These connect the steering rack to the wheels. When they wear, you get slop in the steering, a wandering feel and often uneven tyre wear as well. A worn tie rod end is another common RWC fail.
- Ball joints: Excessive play here also translates into vague steering and can let the wheel wander under braking.
- Wheel alignment out of spec: After you've hit enough Melbourne potholes, alignment drifts. A car that pulls to one side or requires an off-centre steering wheel to go straight often just needs an alignment — but only after any worn parts are replaced first.
A wheel alignment is only as good as the parts it's set against. Aligning a car with worn tie rod ends or ball joints is a waste of money — the settings won't hold. Replace worn components first, then align.
Vibrations through the wheel or seat
Vibration is its own category and worth separating out, because it's frequently not a suspension fault.
- Vibration at a specific speed (say 90–110 km/h) through the steering wheel: Usually wheel balance or a buckled rim, not suspension.
- Vibration that gets worse over bumps and comes with a floaty ride: More likely worn shock absorbers failing to control the wheel.
- Vibration under braking: Typically warped brake rotors rather than suspension, though worn steering joints can make it feel worse.
Because vibration has so many possible sources, it's one where a proper diagnosis saves you from replacing the wrong thing.
Worn shock absorbers: the symptoms people miss
Shocks (and struts) deteriorate so gradually that most drivers don't notice — they simply adapt to a car that handles progressively worse. Then they drive a fresh one and get a shock at how far theirs had drifted.
Signs your shock absorbers are worn
- The car keeps bouncing after a bump instead of settling in one movement
- Nose-dive under braking and squatting under acceleration feel exaggerated
- A floaty, wallowy feeling on undulating roads and freeway on-ramps
- Increased body roll leaning into corners and roundabouts
- Visible oil leaking down the shock body
- Cupped or scalloped tyre wear (see below)
Worn shocks don't just make the ride worse — they lengthen braking distances and reduce grip, because a bouncing tyre spends less time firmly on the road. They're a genuine safety item.
Uneven tyre wear: reading the tread like a map
Your tyres are one of the best diagnostic tools you have. The wear pattern tells you what the suspension and steering are doing.
Common patterns and their causes
- Wear on the inside or outside edge only: Camber or toe out of alignment, often after pothole damage or worn suspension parts letting geometry shift.
- Feathering (tread ramped sharp on one side of each block): Toe misalignment, frequently tied to worn tie rod ends.
- Cupping or scalloping (regular dips around the tyre): Classic worn shock absorber symptom — the wheel is bouncing and scrubbing the tread.
- Both edges worn, centre fine: Chronic under-inflation.
- Centre worn, edges fine: Over-inflation.
If you're replacing tyres more often than you'd expect and the wear isn't even across the tread, don't just fit new rubber and move on. The new tyres will wear out the same way until the underlying cause — worn parts or bad alignment — is fixed.

Selling a car in Victoria, or re-registering one, means passing a Roadworthy inspection. Suspension and steering are core parts of that check, and several of the components above are common fail items:
- Ball joints with excessive play
- Worn or torn tie rod ends and steering joints
- Leaking or ineffective shock absorbers
- Perished control arm bushes allowing excessive movement
- Tyres worn below the legal tread limit or with damage from misalignment
The frustrating part for a lot of sellers is failing on tyres that were only recently fitted — because a worn steering or suspension fault chewed them out. It's another reason to chase the cause rather than the symptom.
Why Melbourne roads make this worse
None of these parts is designed to last forever, but our conditions bring failures forward. Tram tracks deliver sharp, repeated impacts straight into the suspension. Potholes that open up after winter rain can bend a rim or knock alignment out in a single hit. The inner-city speed humps punish bushes and links, and longer commutes from the outer suburbs simply add kilometres of wear.
