There's a particular kind of noise that creeps up on you. One month the car is quiet, the next there's a low hum on the freeway that you find yourself turning the radio up to drown out. Give it another few weeks and the hum becomes a roar, then maybe a grinding growl that changes pitch depending on which way the road curves.

Nine times out of ten, that's a wheel bearing on its way out. But it's easy to confuse with tyre noise, and occasionally it's a CV joint instead. Getting the diagnosis right matters, because replacing tyres won't fix a bearing, and ignoring a genuinely failing bearing can leave you stranded — or worse, cause a wheel to seize at 100km/h.

What a failing wheel bearing actually sounds like

A wheel bearing lets your wheel spin freely and smoothly while holding it firmly to the hub. When the internal rollers or races start to wear, pit or lose their grease, the smoothness goes and you get noise and vibration transmitted straight into the cabin.

The classic wheel bearing noise symptoms are:

  • A low-frequency hum, drone or roar that rises and falls with road speed — not engine speed. If you coast in neutral and the noise tracks the speedo, that's a strong bearing clue.
  • Noise that gets worse over time. Bearings don't heal. A hum that's slowly become a growl over a few months is textbook.
  • A cyclic "wub-wub-wub" at lower speeds that blurs into a steady roar as you speed up.
  • Vibration through the floor or steering wheel in bad cases, sometimes with a slight wobble you can feel through the seat.
  • Play in the wheel. With the car safely raised, grab the tyre at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it. Noticeable knocking or movement can point to a worn bearing (though it can also be a suspension joint — more on ruling those out below).

The road test that separates bearing noise from tyre noise

This is the part most people skip, and it's the part that actually tells you what's going on. You'll want a quiet stretch of road where you can safely change speed and gently weave. Here's the sequence.

1. The load-shift test (the big one)

Get up to a steady speed where the noise is clearly present — usually 60–90km/h. Now gently sway the car left and right within your lane, or take a long sweeping curve each way. Pay attention to what the noise does:

  • Noise gets louder turning LEFT (weight shifts onto the RIGHT wheels) → the failing bearing is usually on the right.
  • Noise gets louder turning RIGHT (weight shifts onto the LEFT wheels) → the failing bearing is usually on the left.
The logic is simple: when you corner, weight loads up the outside wheels. A worn bearing complains more under load, so it gets louder when the car leans onto it. A healthy bearing on the other side goes quieter.

Tyre noise, by contrast, barely changes when you gently sway the car. It's more tied to the road surface than to cornering load.

2. The coast test

Get the noise going, then pop the car into neutral (or just lift off the accelerator) and coast. If the noise stays roughly the same, it's rotational — bearing or tyre. If it changes or disappears when you're off the throttle versus on it, you're more likely looking at a driveline issue like a CV joint or diff.

3. The surface test (to catch tyre noise)

Drive over different surfaces — coarse country bitumen, smooth new asphalt, concrete freeway sections. Tyre noise changes dramatically with the surface. A worn or cupped tyre will roar on coarse chip and go quiet on smooth blacktop. A wheel bearing largely ignores the surface — it hums the same on everything because the noise is coming from inside the hub, not the tread.

When it's actually the tyres

Tyres are the great impostor here, and worn tyres can hum surprisingly like a bearing. Suspect tyres if:

  • The noise changes noticeably with road surface (bearings don't care about the surface).
  • You can see uneven or "cupped" wear — scalloped patches around the tread that you can feel by running your hand across it.
  • Rotating the tyres front-to-back changes the noise character or moves it around the car.
  • The tyres are aggressive all-terrain or heavily worn — both are naturally noisy.

A quick tyre inspection and a rotation is cheap insurance before you commit to bearing work. If a rotation changes things, you've found your culprit.

The CV joint clue: clicking when you turn

On front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive cars, the CV (constant velocity) joints transfer power to the wheels while allowing them to steer and move over bumps. When the outer CV joint wears — usually after a torn boot lets the grease escape and grit get in — it makes a very distinctive noise.

The signature of CV joint clicking when turning is:

  • A rhythmic click-click-click or knock-knock that appears when you're turning and accelerating — think pulling out of a roundabout or a tight car park manoeuvre.
  • It gets faster as you speed up and louder the sharper you turn.
  • It goes quiet again when you straighten up.

An inner CV joint on the way out tends to produce more of a clunk or vibration under hard acceleration in a straight line. If you spot a split rubber boot with grease flung around the inside of the wheel arch, that's your early warning — catching it before the joint is ruined can mean a boot-and-regrease instead of a full shaft.

Ruling out the other usual suspects

Noises at speed can come from a few places, and it pays to keep them separate:

  • Brake vibration or grinding that only appears when you brake points to warped rotors or worn pads, not bearings.
  • Clunks over bumps with no speed-related hum are more likely suspension or steering components — ball joints, control arm bushes, sway bar links.
  • A whine that tracks engine RPM rather than road speed is usually driveline or accessory related, not a wheel bearing.

The distinguishing feature of a wheel bearing is that steady, speed-linked hum-to-roar that responds to cornering load. Hold onto that and you'll rarely be led astray.

Why you shouldn't sit on a noisy bearing

A quiet hum won't leave you stranded tomorrow. But a bearing that's already roaring is one that's shedding metal internally, and heat and play only build from there. Left long enough, a failed bearing can seize, allow the wheel to develop dangerous play, damage the ABS sensor and hub, or in the worst cases let a wheel part company with the car.
