Power Steering Whine, Heavy Wheel or Fluid Leak? Diagnosing Hydraulic vs Electric Faults in Your Driveway
Power steering trouble tends to announce itself in one of three ways: a whine or groan when you turn, a wheel that suddenly feels like you're parking a truck, or a puddle of oily fluid under the front of the car. The tricky part is that the fix depends entirely on which kind of steering system your car has. A 2006 Commodore and a 2018 i30 can have identical symptoms with completely different causes and completely different repair bills.
This guide is about the power steering system itself — the pump, fluid, rack, EPS motor and torque sensor. If your complaint is a clunk, knock or rattle over bumps, that's usually suspension or steering-component wear (ball joints, tie rods, bushes) and belongs to a different diagnosis. Here we're focused on effort and noise while steering.
First: which system does your car have?
Before you diagnose anything, work out whether you're dealing with hydraulic power steering (HPS) or electric power steering (EPS). This single fact changes everything.
Hydraulic power steering (older, roughly pre-2010)
- There's a power steering fluid reservoir under the bonnet, usually a small cap marked "power steering" or with a steering-wheel symbol.
- A belt-driven pump sits on the engine, connected by high-pressure hoses to the steering rack.
- Common on older Falcons, Commodores, Hiluxes, Navaras and most utes and 4WDs.
Electric power steering (most cars 2010 onward)
- No fluid reservoir for steering — nothing to top up.
- An electric motor assists the steering, controlled by a torque sensor and a computer.
- Faults usually trigger a warning light (a steering wheel with an exclamation mark) and store a fault code.
- Standard on modern Mazda, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, VW and most small-to-mid cars.
Quick test: pop the bonnet and look for a power steering fluid reservoir. If there's fluid to check, it's hydraulic. If there's no reservoir and steering trouble comes with a dashboard light, it's electric.
Diagnosing hydraulic power steering faults
Symptom: a whine or groan when turning
A whine that rises with steering effort — worst at full lock or when parking — is the classic hydraulic complaint. Work through it in order:
- Check the fluid level. Low fluid is the number one cause of pump whine. Wipe the dipstick or check against the min/max lines on the reservoir with the engine off and cool.
- Look at the fluid condition. Healthy fluid is clear red or amber. Dark brown, black or foamy fluid means it's degraded or has air in it — both make the pump noisy.
- Listen while a helper turns the wheel (engine idling, car stationary). A steady whine that tracks steering effort points to the pump or a low/aerated system. A whine even when driving straight often means the pump is on its way out.
Symptom: a fluid leak
If you're topping up regularly or finding oily patches on the driveway, trace the source:
- At the pump — leaks often show around the front seal, leaving fluid down the front of the engine.
- At the hoses — high-pressure hoses crack with age; look for weeping fittings and swollen sections.
- At the rack — fluid at the ends of the steering rack, often soaking the rubber boots, means the rack seals are gone. This is the more serious (and expensive) leak.
Slide a clean sheet of cardboard under the front overnight and note where the drips land — front-centre suggests pump or hoses; either side near the wheels suggests the rack.
Symptom: a heavy wheel
On a hydraulic system, sudden heaviness usually comes down to a snapped or slipping drive belt (you'll often lose the alternator/charging at the same time), a failed pump, or fluid so low the pump is sucking air. If the wheel is heavy and the battery light is on, check the belt first.
Diagnosing electric power steering (EPS) faults
EPS has no fluid and no belt-driven pump, so the failure modes are different. There's nothing to top up — resist the urge to "add fluid," because there's nowhere for it to go.
Symptom: a heavy wheel with a warning light
This is the signature EPS failure. When the system detects a fault, it disables assistance as a safety measure — the steering still works, but it goes heavy, especially at low speed. Causes include:
- Torque sensor fault — the sensor that measures how hard you're turning; a common failure that kills assistance.
- EPS motor or control module fault — internal electrical failure in the assist unit.
- Low battery voltage or a poor earth — EPS is sensitive to voltage. A tired battery or corroded connection can trigger faults; sometimes a simple restart restores assistance temporarily.
You can't see EPS faults by eye — they live in the car's computer. A scan tool reads the stored fault codes and points straight at the sensor, motor or wiring at fault. This is where a proper diagnostic scan saves you guessing (and replacing) expensive parts.
Symptom: intermittent heaviness or notchy steering
Assistance that comes and goes, or a wheel that feels notchy or "sticky" in spots, often points to the torque sensor or a marginal connection rather than the motor. Note exactly when it happens — cold starts, after a bump, at certain speeds — because that pattern helps narrow it down.
Does EPS ever whine?
Rarely, but yes — a worn EPS motor or its gearing can produce a faint electrical whir or grinding as it assists. It's a very different sound from a hydraulic pump's steady groan, and it won't respond to any fluid check.
Quick reference: matching symptom to system
- Whine that rises with steering, fluid to check → hydraulic: low/old fluid or failing pump.
- Oily leak under the front, needing top-ups → hydraulic: pump seal, hose or rack.
- Heavy wheel + battery light → hydraulic: check the drive belt first.
- Heavy wheel + steering warning light, no fluid anywhere → electric: torque sensor, motor or voltage fault (needs a scan).
- Intermittent heaviness that clears on restart → electric: likely sensor or wiring/voltage.
What you can safely do yourself
- Identify your system (fluid reservoir vs no reservoir).
- On hydraulic cars: check fluid level and condition, and inspect the belt and hoses.
- On any car: note when the symptom happens and whether a warning light is on.
- Use cardboard overnight to locate a leak.
