Not necessarily. Coolant colour is one of the most misunderstood things under a car's bonnet, and topping up with the wrong type is a mistake we see all the time on Melbourne driveways. Coolant does more than stop the engine boiling

The long-life family. Uses organic acids instead of silicates, so it lasts far longer — often five years or 150,000km+. Many European and later Australian-delivered vehicles run OAT. VW, Audi and Skoda's familiar pink coolant sits here, as does the orange "Dex-Cool" style used in some GM vehicles.
HOAT — Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (often yellow, blue or turquoise)
A blend of both worlds — organic acids plus some silicates. Common in many Asian and European makes. Manufacturers like Toyota, Honda, Mazda and others each specify their own variations, which is why Toyota's pink Super Long Life Coolant and Honda's blue Type 2 aren't interchangeable even though both are "long-life."
The key takeaway: two coolants can look identical and be chemically incompatible, and two correct coolants for different cars can look nothing alike. Colour is a starting point, never the answer.
Why mixing incompatible coolants goes wrong
This is the part that surprises people. When you mix, say, an OAT coolant with an older silicate-based IAT type, the additive packages can react. The result is often described as "gelling" — a thick, sludgy paste that forms inside the system.
That gel does real harm:
- Blocks the radiator and heater core — narrow passages clog, so heat can't escape and you start running hot.
- Kills coolant flow — the water pump ends up pushing thick, contaminated fluid, and can fail early.

- Attacks seals and gaskets — the wrong chemistry can degrade hoses and even contribute to head gasket trouble over time.
