1. The battery-shaped dash light comes on
This is the big one, and it's badly named. The red battery symbol is not a battery warning — it's a charging system warning. It means the car has detected that the alternator isn't producing the voltage it should. It might flicker on under load first (headlights on, demister running) then stay on permanently. Don't ignore it just because the car still drives.
2. Headlights that dim or pulse at idle
Healthy headlights hold a steady brightness. If yours get noticeably dimmer when you're stopped at the lights and brighten again when you rev, the alternator is struggling to produce enough output at low RPM. Pulsing or flickering in time with the engine is another classic sign, often pointing to a worn alternator or a slipping/glazed drive belt.
3. Accessories acting strangely
- Power windows moving slower than they used to
- The infotainment or radio randomly resetting
- Interior lights fading in and out
- The climate control fan losing puff at idle
